Hydrogen sulfide may form through natural underground processes, sulfur-related bacteria, or reactions inside a water heater. Methane can occur naturally in groundwater as organic material breaks down, although nearby land uses and subsurface conditions may also play a role.
Aeration and proper venting can release dissolved gases from the water. Oxidation and filtration may also be used for hydrogen sulfide. Because methane can accumulate and become flammable in enclosed spaces, suspected methane should be evaluated by a qualified professional.
