What causes iron in water, and how is it treated?

Iron occurs naturally in Delmarva groundwater and may also enter water through corroding pipes. Clear-water iron is dissolved and may appear colorless at first, while oxidized iron produces reddish-brown particles and stains.

Treatment depends on the type and concentration of iron, along with pH and other water conditions. A softener may handle limited clear-water iron, while higher levels or oxidized iron often require oxidation and dedicated filtration.
