Start with your utility’s annual Consumer Confidence Report, sometimes called a water quality report. It lists regulated contaminants detected in the public water system and explains whether the results met applicable standards. You can request the report from your water provider or search for it through the EPA’s Consumer Confidence Report tool.

That report describes water in the distribution system, not necessarily the exact water coming from your faucet. Household plumbing can affect water quality, so testing your tap water provides a more complete answer.
