Water Testing Labs

Under the Safe Drinking Water Act’s guidelines, we strive to provide in-depth and accessible water testing labs for comprehensive water testing. This allows everyone to gain a better understanding of what's in their water and ensure it remains clean and as free from contaminants as possible. At water testing labs, there are four different kinds of contaminants that we look for during water quality analyses—physical, chemical, biological, and radiological contaminants.

  • Physical contaminants are contaminants that affect the physical appearance or properties of the water. This can include natural contaminants like organic material, such as algae in the water, or build-ups of sediment from soil erosion. Artificial contaminants would be things like garbage allowed to get into a water source.
  • Chemical contaminants may evoke thoughts of oil, poisons, bleach, and other man-made products—and you’d be correct—but it also includes natural elements, such as toxins produced by bacteria or animals.
  • Biological contaminants refer to organisms in the water or, more specifically, microbes. Bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and parasites all constitute as biological contaminants.
  • Radiological is a bit more abstract, being that they’re chemical elements with an unbalanced number of protons or neutrons. This makes atoms unstable and emit ionizing radiation—examples include uranium, plutonium, and cesium.

While we strive to keep water as clean as possible, it’s impossible to make any source of water completely pure. This isn’t a cause for alarm, however, as the number of contaminants in clean drinking water is so minimal that it’s no threat to our health. This ever-constant presence of contaminants, however, is why our water testing labs are diligent in monitoring and protecting Delmarva’s drinking water.
