What causes dirt and sediment in water, and how is it treated?

Sediment may enter through a private well, disturbed groundwater, aging pipes, well construction problems, or work on a municipal water main. Delmarva’s sandy soils can also contribute fine particles to some private wells.

Treatment may include a properly sized sediment filter, centrifugal separator, backwashing filter, or well repair. The particle size and amount of sediment should be identified first so the filter does not clog too quickly or restrict household water pressure.
